Ian McHugh contributed to the April 2010 edition of Australian Institute of Company Directors magazine. He was one of three leading Not-for-Profit directors asked to comment on the role of directors in relation to the reform initiatives which could lead to an overhaul in the Not-for-Profit sector.
Ian commented on the recent report by the Productivity Commission's "Contribution of the Not-for Profit Sector", published in January 2010.
He noted that if all the recommendations for change made by the Productivity Commission were taken up, there would be a need for directors of Not-for-Profit organisations to spend more time on the planning process and that just attending a mangement or Board meeting once a month may not be enough.
With the probable increase in obligations on directors of Not-for-Profit organisations, the learning processes will have to be improved so that they can both continue to effectively contribute to their community and support the CEO - too often immersed in the operational, day to day management of the business.
