The draft report of the Productivity Commission's inquiry into the Not-For-Profit (NFP) sector is due out in mid-October.
The Commission has been asked to adopt a broad definition of the not for profit sector to encompass most types of not for profit organisations, including Australian based international aid and development agencies.
Most importantly, the Commission will study how service delivery can be improved to this vast sector from government and non-government funding as well as how the NFP sector delivers services in their areas of competency.
Recently, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released figures showing that the NFP sector in 2006/2007 contributed almost $50bn to the Australian economy. In that period, NFPs generated income of $77bn and held nearly $140bn of assets.
NFPs employed nearly 900 000 people supported by over 4.5million volunteers.
Despite being such a substantial contributor to the Australian economy, the sector often works in a "silo" - like, fragmented manner. Communication between different parts of the sector is basic or non-existent. Planning is another area which is sometimes neglected because of a perceived need to respond to issues as and when they arise , trying to solve them on an "ad hoc" basis.
NFP Consulting has substantial experience both working in, and advising the Not-For-Profit sector.
